Operatives of Ogun State Police Command shot dead an armed robbery suspect in the early hours of Friday, July 16, 2021, on Ijebu Ode-Sagamu highway while his gang was allegedly robbing innocent people of their belongings on the highway.
Thenewsbearer learnt that the suspect met his Waterloo when the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Odogbolu division, SP Awoniyi Adekunle and his men, who were on joint patrol with a team of military men, received a distress call that armed robbers numbering about seven had blocked the road around Southwestern University, and were dispossessing people of their belongings.
The command’s image-maker, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, who made this known in a statement on Saturday, July 17, said that when the DPO got the call, he and his team moved to the scene.
“But as soon as the armed robbers sighted them, they engaged them in gun duel which lasted for about 45 minutes. At the end of the encounter, one of the robbers was arrested with severe bullet wounds while others escaped with varying degrees of gunshot wounds,” the PPRO said.
He stated that the arrested suspect however gave up the ghost on the way to the hospital.
Oyeyemi stated further that the Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun, who commended the quick response and bravery of his men, had directed that the entire area be properly combed, with a view of apprehending the members of the gang who escaped from the scene of the robbery.
Ajogun also appealed to members of the public, especially hospitals, to alert the police if anyone is seen with gunshot injury in their area.
