An 18-year-old boy, Abdulsamad Suleiman, who was arrested over the gruesome killing of a housewife, Rukayya Jamilu, aged 21, with pestle, has confessed that he committed the act when he sighted phones in her house and wanted to cover his tracks after taking them.

Suleiman, of Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters, Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State, who sold two of the stolen phones for N12,000, was arrested by Kano State Police Command after an investigation conducted by the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department and Department of State Services (DSS) when the attack on the housewife was reported.

Also picked was Mu’azzam Lawan (17), of the same address, for being an accomplice, as he was given one of the stolen phones which he sold for N2,000.

•The murdered housewife

The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Wednesday, March 23, 2022, said that the husband of the deceased residing in Danbare Quarters, Kumbotso LGA reported on February 12 at about 8:30pm that on the same date, at about 8pm, when he returned home from his place of work, he met his wife soaked in blood on her bed and motionless.

He added that his three-year-old son, Anwar, and a year old daughter, Amina, were inflicted with grievous injuries.

“On receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, Sama’ila Shu’aibu Dikko, raised and instructed a team of detectives, led by SP Ibrahim Hamma, Divisional Police Officer, Dorayi Babba Division, to proceed to the scene.

“The team moved to the scene and rushed the victims to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, where the housewife was examined and confirmed dead by a medical doctor while the two other victims were admitted,” Kiyawa said.

The PPRO stated further that when discreet investigation was carried out, the suspect confessed that on February 12 at about 4pm, he went to the house of the deceased who was his relative and met her on the bed.

After exchanging greetings, he saw three mobile phones and took them. But on the realisation that she knew him very well, he picked a pestle and started hitting her head with it repeatedly, and also extended the same to her two children before leaving with the phones.

Suleiman further disclosed that he gave one of the phones to his friend and sold the remaining two for N12,000.

Kiyawa said that the confession led to the arrest of the friend, Lawan, who also opened up that he sold the phone given to him for N2,000.

He added that the case would be charged to court after the completion of the investigation.

In his comment, the state Commissioner of Police, who said that criminals would not have a hiding place in the state, warned them to repent or leave the state completely.

CP Dikko added that if the warning should go unheeded, they would be arrested and made to face the wrath of the law.
