Three miners were killed in Benue State on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, while one of them was injured when the mine surface collapsed on some of them, leading to their being trapped.
The incident occurred at Anyiin in Logo Local Government Area of the state.
Thenewsbearer gathered that miners had been carrying out their activities in the area for a long time.
According to a local resident, the miners were busy at work when the surface crumbled on them.
“Three of the miners died instantly; others were seriously wounded and were taken to a hospital in Anyiin,” an indigene said.
He also disclosed that it was the miner who sustained injuries that reported the collapse of the mine.
In a telephone interview, the local government chairman, Terseer Agber said that four people were trapped in the pit.
The chairman said: “Very early in the morning today (Tuesday), I was called and informed that about four people were trapped in a mining pit. So I directed that they should try and do something. Later on, they came back and reported that they recovered three bodies and one was injured.
“I have been calling series of meetings with them to resolve the matter, but each time the meeting would fail.
“The state government is aware of their activities in the area.
“Governor Samuel Ortom had sent two Commissioners, including that of Agriculture, as well as Lands and Survey but nothing happened.
“The miners said that they have no dealing with the state government; that they collected their licence from Abuja and it’s the prerogative of the federal government; they don’t have any dealing with Benue State government.”
When contacted, the state police command spokesperson, DSP Catherine Anene said that she had yet to get the report of the incident.
