Two suspected armed robbers met their Waterloo on Sunday, May 9, 2021, as they were fatally shot by operatives from Ogun State Police Command at Sagamu interchange, on Lagos-Ibadan highway, during an exchange of gunfire.
The police image-maker in the state, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, made this known on Monday, May 10, in a press statement.
According to Oyeyemi, the event that led to the operatives’ encounter with the armed robbers began when the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Sagamu Division, CSP Okiki Agunbiade, received a distress call at about 9pm, that a robbery operation was going on at Sagamu interchange.
The DPO was also told that one of the victims had been seriously injured, which made him to quickly lead his patrol team to the scene.
The PPRO said that when the operatives got to the scene, they met the robbers attacking another victim, one Agba Enoch, which made the team to engage them in a gun duel, resulting in fatal injuries to two of the armed robbery suspects, while others escaped with gunshot injuries.
He said that items recovered from them included three handsets, a mock gun, an electric clipper, three Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards and a blood-stained cutlass.
The PPRO added: “The injured victim, one Adekunle Adewale, who was seriously inflicted with machete cuts on the head, was rushed to hospital for medical attention.”
He stated further that the state Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun, who commended the gallantry display of his men, had directed a massive manhunt for the fleeing members of the gang, in order to bring them to justice.
The police commissioner appealed to members of the public, especially hospitals, to quickly alert the police if anybody with gunshot injuries is sighted in their areas.
