The United States government has advised its citizens not to travel to 23 countries across Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and the Caribbean due to heightened security concerns, including terrorism, armed conflict, crime, kidnapping, and civil unrest.
The warning forms part of the US Department of State’s Level 4 travel advisory, the highest alert level issued by Washington, which urges Americans to avoid travelling to destinations considered extremely dangerous.
According to the State Department, countries under the “Do Not Travel” category pose significant risks to the safety and security of travellers, while the ability of the US government to provide emergency assistance in such locations may be limited.
The countries listed under the Level 4 advisory include Afghanistan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Burma (Myanmar), the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, North Korea, Niger, Russia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Venezuela, Yemen, and parts of Mexico.
The State Department said the advisories are based on a range of factors, including terrorism threats, ongoing armed conflicts, kidnapping risks, civil unrest, crime levels, health emergencies, and the possibility of wrongful detention.
US authorities urged citizens currently residing in or planning to visit affected destinations to monitor official travel advisories and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which provides security updates and enables US embassies to assist citizens during emergencies.
The travel advisory system is divided into four levels: Level 1, which advises travellers to exercise normal precautions; Level 2, exercise increased caution; Level 3, reconsider travel; and Level 4, do not travel.
Countries placed in the highest category are considered to present life-threatening risks to visitors.
The State Department reviews and updates its travel advisories periodically in response to changing security, health, and geopolitical conditions around the world.
