LAGOS — A fresh batch of 271 Nigerians evacuated from South Africa is expected to arrive in Lagos as authorities continue efforts to assist citizens affected by rising anti-immigration tensions in the country.
The latest returnees are part of an ongoing voluntary repatriation programme launched following widespread protests in several South African cities, where demonstrators have called for stricter action against undocumented migrants and foreign nationals. The protests have heightened fears among many immigrants, prompting some to seek assistance to return home.
Nigerian officials said the incoming group would add to the hundreds of citizens already repatriated in recent weeks. According to available figures, more than 600 Nigerians have so far been evacuated, while additional flights are expected as authorities process requests from those wishing to leave South Africa.
The anti-immigration demonstrations, which drew thousands of participants, have been linked to concerns over unemployment, crime and pressure on public services.
Although South African authorities have urged peaceful conduct and warned against violence, reports of looting and attacks on migrant-owned businesses have fueled anxiety among foreign communities.
Some of the returning Nigerians said they decided to leave after feeling increasingly unsafe. Several reported that their businesses had been disrupted or damaged during the unrest, while others cited fears of xenophobic attacks as the main reason for returning home.
The Nigerian government has assured returnees of support and reintegration assistance, while continuing to monitor developments in South Africa. Officials have also encouraged Nigerians residing in the country to remain vigilant and maintain contact with diplomatic representatives.
South African authorities, meanwhile, have reiterated their commitment to enforcing the law and protecting all residents regardless of nationality, while addressing concerns surrounding immigration through established legal channels.
