The death of renowned Ibadan chief, veteran journalist and cultural advocate, Chief Lekan Alabi, has drawn heartfelt tributes from Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, who described the late elder statesman as one of the state’s most distinguished sons.
Reacting to the news of Alabi’s passing on Saturday, August 1, the governor said Oyo State and Nigeria had lost an exceptional personality whose influence transcended journalism, public service and the preservation of Yoruba culture.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Makinde said Chief Alabi devoted his life to promoting truth, preserving history and providing wise counsel on issues of public interest.
According to the governor, the late Ibadan chief was widely respected for his integrity, deep knowledge of Yoruba culture and unwavering commitment to the progress of society, qualities that earned him admiration across generations.
“Chief Lekan Alabi was a man of immense wisdom, integrity and dedication. His voice carried the weight of truth, his counsel was sought by leaders across generations, and his commitment to the preservation of Yoruba culture and values was unwavering.
Oyo State has lost one of its finest sons,” Makinde said.
The governor extended his condolences to the Alabi family, the Ibadan traditional institution, friends and associates of the deceased, praying that God would grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
He noted that although Chief Alabi had departed, his remarkable contributions to journalism, cultural development and public affairs would continue to inspire future generations.
Makinde also assured the bereaved family that the government and people of Oyo State shared in their grief and prayed for the peaceful repose of the late elder statesman’s soul.
