Following the abduction of about 20 passengers along the Osi/Obbo-Aiyegunle road in Kwara State, the police command successfully carried out an operation and rescued all the victims.
Three of them who were shot by the kidnappers have also been taken to hospital for prompt medical treatment.
Confirming the rescue operation on Saturday, August 17, the police spokesperson, DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi said that the police promptly sprang into action when the report of the abduction was received at about 3pm on August 16 that gunmen numbering about 10 had ambushed three vehicles along the Osi/Obbo-Aiyegunle road.
“The gunmen abducted the passengers numbering 20 from three commercial vehicles and forcefully led them into the surrounding bush.
“Upon receipt of this distress call, the Kwara State Police Command, in collaboration with local vigilantes, swiftly mobilized the Divisional patrol team and other tactical teams who launched a thorough search operation.
“The operation took place within the dense forest area between Obbo-Aiyegunle and Obbo-Ile.
“Through the concerted efforts of our Police detectives, vigilante and community members, the team successfully rescued 20 victims.
“It is with great relief that we report the safe return of these individuals. Three of the victims who sustained gunshot injuries on their legs during the ordeal have been promptly evacuated to the hospital for urgent medical attention. We wish them speedy recovery,” the PPRO stated.
She said that the Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, has assured the public that the search for the perpetrators was still ongoing.
The police commissioner commended the bravery and swift response of the command officers and the cooperation of the local vigilantes which led to the successful rescue without any casualty among the victims.
He reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and travellers within Kwara State, adding: “Our men are diligently combing the area, determined to bring the criminals to justice.
DSP Ejire-Adeyemi also urged the public to remain calm and vigilant, and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through police emergency lines.
She said that further updates on this case would be communicated to the public as the investigation progresses.
