Wednesday, February 25, 2025. Abuja: The Presidency has confirmed that Kayode Egbetokun stepped down as the Inspector-General of Police in a letter he submitted on Tuesday, saying he needed to focus on pressing family matters that require his full attention.
However, sources within the Presidency told reporters that President Bola Tinubu asked him to resign during a private meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday evening.
One senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that it was at that meeting that Egbetokun was told to go.
The IGP’s visit to the Villa was not part of a scheduled event; he arrived around the time governors were attending an interfaith iftar with the president, which initially raised questions about his purpose there.
Egbetokun was appointed IGP on June 19, 2023, after serving as Deputy Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department. His leadership faced growing criticism over the country’s worsening security situation, including high-profile kidnappings, bandit attacks, and other violent crimes.
The Presidency has not given further details beyond the family-related reason, but multiple reports indicate his resignation was linked to pressure from the administration.
