Gunmen have killed a traditional ruler in Benue State, Chief Momo Awodi, alongside his wife, Abigail, and their son, Boniface Ochowechi, in a fresh attack on Olegabulu community in Agatu Local Government Area.
The attack, which occurred on Thursday night, also claimed the lives of two other residents, identified as Ochowechi Ochegwu and Deborah Ochowechi, while one person reportedly sustained injuries.
According to local sources, the assailants arrived in the community on motorcycles and reportedly blended in with residents before launching the deadly assault.
The attackers were said to have stormed the monarch’s residence, opened fire on occupants, and later moved to another house where two more people were killed.
A community source said the attackers operated for about 20 minutes before fleeing, leaving panic and destruction in their wake.
Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, Melvin Ejeh, confirmed the incident, describing it as tragic and noting that security operatives had visited the scene.
He said five persons were killed in the attack, while one victim survived with injuries.
The Benue State Police Command said it was awaiting detailed reports on the incident.
The latest killings have heightened concerns over recurring violence in parts of Benue State, with residents calling for urgent security intervention to prevent further attacks.
