‎Nigeria begins 30-day visa-free entry for Rwandan citizens

‎The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced the implementation of a 30-day visa exemption policy for citizens of Rwanda, in a move aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties and boosting intra-African mobility.

‎The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) announced on Friday, May 15, 2026, that all arrangements for the immediate enforcement of the directive had been completed following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s announcement at the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali, Rwanda.
‎
‎Under the new bilateral arrangement, Rwandan nationals can now enter Nigeria without a visa for up to 30 days for lawful activities such as tourism, business, and official engagements.
‎
‎The NIS, however, clarified that Rwandans wishing to remain in Nigeria beyond the approved 30-day period must obtain the appropriate visa through Nigerian diplomatic missions abroad or via the country’s e-Visa platform.
‎
‎According to the Service, all international entry points, including airports, land borders, and seaports, have been directed to begin immediate implementation of the policy in line with the presidential directive.
‎
‎In a statement signed by the Service Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, the NIS described the initiative as a reflection of the “strong diplomatic and bilateral relations” between Nigeria and Rwanda.
‎
‎The agency added that the policy is expected to promote tourism, economic cooperation, and the broader goal of increased African integration.
‎
‎“The Service remains committed to facilitating safe, orderly, and lawful migration in accordance with international best practices and the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement said.
‎
‎The visa waiver follows a similar gesture previously extended to Nigerian citizens by the Rwandan government.
‎
‎The NIS also urged members of the public seeking clarification or assistance to contact the agency through its verified communication channels, including its social media platforms and 24-hour contact centre lines.
