The Abia State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old woman, Mrs Gift Nwoko, for an alleged attempted murder.
The arrest followed a viral video on social media which showed the woman attempting to harm her niece, 12-year-old Chimamanda Ebo, with a knife.
Recovered from the suspect was a knife as an exhibit.
The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said that preliminary investigation revealed that on Sunday, July 5, Mrs. Nwoko, of Ehimembano, Imo State, who resides at IBB Housing Estate, Umuahia, and is an aunt to Chimamanda, used a knife in an attempt to kill the girl who was living with her.
Thenewsbearer learnt that the basis of the alleged attempted murder was that Chimamanda refused to carry out her aunt’s directive to spread clothes on the clothesline before the suspect left for the market.
Investigation, according to the PPRO, also revealed that the suspect had beaten Miss Ebo repeatedly, and had been threatening to kill her.
“Operatives from the World Bank Divisional Police Headquarters, Umuahia, raced to the scene leveraging on actionable intelligence, rescued the victim, apprehended the suspect, and recovered the knife as an exhibit.
“Investigation is ongoing, as the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), and the suspect will be charged for attempted murder upon conclusion of investigation.
“The Command condemns such actions for whatever reasons and advises members of the public to desist from such acts and report such incidents to the nearest police station,” DSP Chinaka stated.
