Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has urged residents to reject politicians who cannot present clear, realistic and people-oriented programmes for the development of the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Makinde made the call on Sunday, October 18, while speaking with journalists shortly after a wreath-laying ceremony and memorial service in honour of his late mother, Chief (Mrs.) Abigail Omojolagbe Makinde, at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Aremo, Ibadan.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the governor urged residents to critically scrutinise the promises and manifestos of political aspirants and their parties as the state approaches another election cycle.
He called on voters to be discerning in their choices, stressing the need to assess political candidates based on the clarity, practicality and people-oriented nature of their proposed programmes for the state’s development.
The memorial service marked six years since the death of the governor’s mother, who passed away on October 15, 2020. Makinde reflected on her values, teachings and the close bond they shared, recalling her motherly love and how their occasional disagreements always ended in reconciliation.
Delivering the sermon, the Provost of the cathedral, Very Rev. Samuel Olawoyin, based his message on Deuteronomy 5:16 and commended Makinde for consistently honouring his parents’ memory despite the demands of public office.
Olawoyin encouraged the congregation to emulate the governor’s commitment to honouring his parents, describing it as a worthy example for others to follow.
The cleric also praised Makinde’s administration for its developmental projects across the state’s geopolitical zones and its commitment to the welfare of workers and pensioners.
He urged the governor to remain focused, sustain his development efforts and trust in God amid commendations and criticisms.
Special prayers were offered for the repose of the souls of the governor’s late parents, as well as for Makinde, his siblings, his family and the peace and progress of Oyo State.
Dignitaries who accompanied the governor included the Commissioner for Lands, Hon. Akin Funmilayo Williams; Commissioner for Energy, Prof. Dahud Shangodoyin; and the Allied People’s Movement (APM) governorship candidate, Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi.
Others were the Chairman of the Pilgrims Welfare Board (Christian Wing), Bishop David Moradeyo; Chaplain of Government House, Pastor Layi Adisa; family members and other government officials.
