Police in New York, United States of America, are searching for three teenagers suspected of shooting dead 15-year-old Ghanaian boy, Javits Frimpong, in the Bronx while he was reportedly walking to school.
Frimpong was shot in the stomach around 9:25 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, near East 171st Street and Crotona Place in the Claremont neighbourhood.
He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital by responding police officers but later died from his injuries.
Investigators said the suspects, believed to be between 16 and 18 years old, fled after the shooting. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Frimpong running for his life as a person dressed in black pursued him before he collapsed.
The motive for the killing remains unclear, although the victim’s father, Thomas Frimpong, suspects it may be connected to alleged bullying at DreamYard Preparatory School.
He said his son had repeatedly complained about being bullied by fellow students, adding that two students were recently suspended following an altercation involving him.
However, police have not established any connection between the school incident and the shooting.
Frimpong moved from Ghana to the United States in October 2025 to reunite with his father and reportedly dreamed of becoming a doctor.
The killing has sparked grief among family members and residents, while Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has condemned the incident and pledged government support to the bereaved family.
Police have appealed to anyone with information about the suspects to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline on 1-800-577-TIPS. No arrests had been announced in the latest reports.
