‎Abuja, Nigeria — The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has condemned recent reports of an alleged coup plot against the federal government, warning that anyone involved in plans to subvert democracy will be held accountable and prosecuted under the law.
‎
‎Speaking on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, during a strategic meeting with senior commanders at the Nigerian Air Force headquarters in Abuja, which marked his first 100 days in office, Aneke described the reported plot as “shameful, shocking and wholly reprehensible.”
‎
‎“I unequivocally condemn recent revelations that plans were made by certain individuals to subvert democracy and violently take over the government,” he said, stressing that any perpetrators will face the full wrath of the law.
‎
‎The air chief reiterated the Nigerian Air Force’s loyalty to the Constitution and the democratically elected government, emphasising that the armed forces must remain politically neutral, especially as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
‎
‎Aneke also reminded commanders of their duty to maintain unity, cohesion and discipline within the ranks to prevent any breach of professional conduct.
‎
‎Reports indicate that more than 40 military personnel and civilians were arrested in connection with an alleged planned coup last year, though families of those detained have appealed for leniency and fair trial.
‎
‎The warning from the Air Force chief comes amid broader security concerns in the region, with Aneke noting that instability in neighbouring Sahel countries and the threat of extremist groups pose challenges to national and regional security.
