Anambra State Police Command has warned that though the Nigeria Police Force respects and recognises the cultural and traditional practices of the people, cultural activity or belief system should not be used as a cover to harass, assault, intimidate, or violate the fundamental human rights of citizens.

The warning followed the violent conduct displayed through reports of assault and intimidation of residents by a masquerade, later identified as a 28-year-old male, Ifesinachi Ezeolu during an outing in Awgbu community, which led to his arrest and also generated public outcry.

Several video recordings circulating online showed the masquerade unleashing violence on passersby, indigenes and celebrants.

In one of the videos, the masquerade was seen jumping on the podium at the event, and started destroying public address system which belonged to the master of ceremony, also an indigene of the community.

In another video, the masquerade chased other smaller masquerades in the community while in yet another, he pushed down two men who were on their motorcycles.

In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Anambra Police Command said that the activities of masquerades, like all public gatherings, must be conducted peacefully and within the confines of the law.

“Therefore, any act capable of causing fear, injury, or public disorder will be promptly addressed,” the statement assured.

The PPRO stated further that investigations were ongoing to identify and bring to justice other suspects involved in the incident.

In his comment, Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu reassured residents that the Command would continue to work with traditional rulers, community leaders and stakeholders to promote peaceful cultural expressions, while ensuring the safety and rights of all individuals.
