Armed robbers went on operation in Ashi area of Ibadan, Oyo State on Friday, June 25, 2021, killing the wife of a former chairman of Ogbomoso South Local Government, and former Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs under Governor Ajimobi’s administration, Hon. Peter Odetomi.
Thenewsbearer learnt that the Commissioner’s wife, Mrs Olayemi Odetomi, was struck by pellets from shots fired by the armed robbers as they tried to gain entry to her room.
The armed robbers, who were said to have numbered about 20, stormed the area at about 1:30 am and divided themselves for operations in about five houses in the area where the Odetomis were living, operating simultaneously.
It was gathered that the armed men who went to the Odetomi’s residence shot at the iron door of the building when the occupants could not open the door.
According to a member of the family, after gaining entry, the armed robbers told the commissioner’s wife to surrender her money and other valuables, but she was able to escape from them by quickly running into her room and locking the door, with one of her sons with her.
However, the armed men went after her, trying to force the door open, while she tried to stop them by pushing the door from her side.
Determined not to be hindered in their operation, the armed robbers reportedly fired shots at the door, with the pellets penetrating the door and hitting the woman at close range.
After entering the room, the armed men took jewelry, phones and ATM cards, among other things, before leaving.
Thenewsbearer further gathered that other gang members operated in about four other houses with their guns sledgehammers, knives and other weapons, with which they broke doors and burglar-proof windows.
It was further learnt the Commissioner’s wife was rushed to the University College Hospital, Ibadan, but was confirmed dead.
Of late, Ibadan had been experiencing series of crime, ranging from assassination, murder, armed robbery, to extra-judicial killing.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of Oyo State Police Command, DSP Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the robbery incident.
He said that the deceased, aged 66, died on the spot after being shot during the robbery.
