At least 75 people have been killed in violent attacks on rural communities in Kwara State, the state governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has confirmed.
Governor AbdulRazaq said the killings happened on Tuesday evening in Woro and Nuku villages in the Kaiama Local Government Area. He described the violence as a brutal and cowardly attack by extremists who sought to force a doctrine on residents.
According to the governor, many victims were killed after resisting the extremists’ demands. The state police also confirmed the assault began around 6 p.m., adding that security forces have since moved into the area, though some residents remain missing.
Governor AbdulRazaq, who visited the affected communities with security chiefs and government officials, expressed deep sorrow for the loss of life and condemned the attackers. He said the incident was different from usual kidnap or banditry attacks and amounted to a massacre against residents for maintaining their beliefs.
In response, the federal government has approved the deployment of an army battalion under “Operation Savannah Shield” to support security efforts and prevent further violence.
