The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the appointment of AIG Banji Badaru Lawal as a substantive Deputy Inspector General of Police representing the South West geopolitical zone.
The appointment was approved at an extraordinary meeting held on Friday, January 17, after the new DIG Lawal appeared before the Commission in plenary., a statement by the PSC Head, Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, said.
Present were the PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd); Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, a retired Judge of the Supreme Court and DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd).
DIG Lawal went through written and oral examinations where he particularly commended the Community Policing programme of the Nigeria Police Force which he said is succeeding and has achieved a lot so far.
Before his appointment, Lawal was the AIG in charge of Border Patrol, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
He now takes over from DIG Sylvester Abiodun Alabi who retired on December 31, 2024 after representing the zone.
Alabi was also the DIG incharge of Force Criminal Investigation Department while in service.
The new DIG served in Oyo State Police Command as a Divisional Police Officer. After he got promoted to an Assistant Commissioner of Police, he worked as a former Commandant, Police Training College, Ikeja, Lagos State; Assistant Commissioner Operations, Ekiti State Command; Abia State Command and Edo State Command.
He later became Area Commander, Uyo, Deputy Commissioner, Operations, Nasarawa State; Deputy Commissioner, Operations, Akwa Ibom State and Deputy Commissioner, Finance and Administration, ICT Force Headquarters, Abuja.
He was also Deputy Commissioner and Deputy Registrar, Central Criminal Registry (CCR) Force Headquarters, Annex, Alagbon Close, Ikoyi; DCP Finance and Administration, Benue State; Deputy Commandant, Police Academy, Wudil, Kano, and Commissioner of Police, General Investigation, Force CID.
The PSC Chairman, who congratulated Lawal on his elevation, charged him to make himself relevant in the Police Management Team.
He also wished him well in his new office.
