Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after collapsing during a training session in Munich, Germany, on Friday.
The German champions confirmed that the 40-year-old Belgian required medical attention after collapsing while observing a training session involving the club’s reserve team.
In a statement, Bayern Munich said Kompany was undergoing a thorough medical examination in hospital and would remain under medical care.
The club added that his coaching staff would handle training sessions and match-related activities until further notice.
Kompany’s hospitalisation came after he had reportedly been battling a viral infection in recent days, which forced him to miss some training sessions ahead of Bayern’s UEFA Champions League encounter with Arsenal on Wednesday.
Despite his recent illness, the former Manchester City captain returned to the touchline for the encounter, which ended in a 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern are scheduled to face Freiburg in a Bundesliga fixture on Sunday, with Kompany’s availability for the match uncertain following the incident.
The club’s board member for sport, Max Eberl, said the coach’s health remained the priority, assuring him of the necessary medical attention and time to recover.
“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority,” Eberl said, adding that the club would provide him with the support he needed to make a speedy recovery.
The incident has raised concerns about the coach’s condition, although Bayern have not publicly disclosed the specific cause of his collapse.
Kompany, who took charge of Bayern in 2024, has guided the club through his second season as manager, with the Bundesliga leaders continuing their domestic and European campaigns.
The club expressed its wishes for his quick recovery as his medical examination continues.
