Community policing was brought to the fore on Sunday, January 17, 2021, when youths of Igboelerin community, Lagos State, foiled the plans of suspected armed robbers by resisting an attack and dislodging them during attempted robbery.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 11.30p.m., when the suspected armed robbers arrived at the community to unleash terror on the residents.
Police image-maker in the state, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement on Tuesday, January 19, that the armed robbers came to the community on unregistered bikes, with an intent to attack their targets.
But they were repelled by the youths, who had been involved in the community policing strategies of the command.
According to Adejobi, an unregistered operational bike and a locally-made pistol, with a live cartridge, were recovered from the robbers.
Commending the youths the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, ordered for a manhunt and arrest of the fleeing armed robbers.
“He also encouraged Lagos residents to embrace the idea of community-based policing, which has paid off in many areas of the state,” the PPRO added.
