President Bola Tinubu and several state governors used their 2025 Christmas messages to appeal for peace, unity, love, and religious tolerance across Nigeria as Christians mark the birth of Jesus Christ. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) warned against unjust taxation and called for tax fairness.
In his Christmas goodwill message, President Tinubu emphasized that religious tolerance is a vital value that holds the country together amid its diverse population. He said no Nigerian should suffer or be targeted because of their faith, and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring religious freedom and protecting all citizens.
Tinubu, now in his third Christmas address since taking office in 2023, acknowledged ongoing concerns about religious freedom in Nigeria and reiterated that his administration will continue to work with religious leaders to promote peace and peaceful coexistence. He also praised the contributions of Christians to national development and wished them a Merry Christmas, urging travellers to be safe and disciplined over the festive period.
Several state governors also shared festive messages.
They called on residents to embrace love, unity, tolerance, and Christ-like values, and highlighted achievements in areas like infrastructure, healthcare, education, and security in their states.
At the same time, the NLC, led by President Joe Ajaero, extended Christmas greetings to workers and citizens but used the occasion to speak out against economic hardship and what it described as unfair tax laws set to take effect in January.
The union urged Nigerians to stand together against policies that harm workers and the less privileged, and called for a tax system that is fair, inclusive, and free from distortion. It also stressed the need for social justice, quality healthcare, education, and security for all.
Other notable figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, urged Nigerians to use the festive season as a time for healing, forgiveness, and national unity. Atiku encouraged citizens to look beyond differences and work together toward a better future for the country.
