A woman Sergeant, Olawoye Bukola, who was shot by a group of thugs during the disrupted Ekiti East House of Assembly Bye Election on Saturday, March 20, 2021, is dead.
Woman sergeant Bukola died at 6:00p.m., on Monday, March 22, at Federal Medical Centre, Ido Ekiti, after fighting for life for two days as a result of gunshot injuries she sustained during the bye election.
In a statement issued by the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Abutu, he said: “The Ekiti State Police Command, with deepest sorrow, announces the death of W/SGT Olawoye Bukola, who was shot by a group of thugs that invaded ward 7, Unit 7 during the recent Ekiti East House of Assembly Bye Election.
“She died at about 1800hrs today, being 22/03/2021, at FMC, Ido-Ekiti, after fighting for her life for days.
“The Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, CP Tunde Mobayo, on behalf of the Command, sympathizes with her family members and pray God grants her soul eternal rest.”
Meanwhile, the PPRO disclosed that the suspects who committed the heinous crime had all been charged to court same day.
It will be recalled that the bye-election ended abruptly on Saturday, when thugs, said to be working for one of the political parties, stormed the election venue and started shooting, killing two people instantly, while others were critically injured.
Those killed included a 50-year-old woman, Bola Adebisi, and 35-year-old Tunde Ogunleye. The deceased woman sergeant becomes the third victim.
The position became vacant after the death of an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker in the State House of Assembly, Honourable Juwa Adegbuyi.
Thenewsbearer gathered also that apart from two police personnel that sustained gunshot injuries, an officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, the election presiding officer and others were pumped with bullets, with some of them in critical conditions at the Methodist Hospital, Omuo General Hospital and Ikole General Hospital.
The shootings had taken place at Ward 7, Unit 7, where Senator Biodun Olujimi, representing Ekiti South Senatorial District, voted.
The unfortunate incident led to the suspension of the bye election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
