Ekiti election: Why IGP’s simple message is a lesson in leadership

This morning, while scrolling through social media, I came across a comment by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, appreciating the men and women of the Nigeria Police Force who were deployed for election security duties during the Ekiti State Governorship Election. I paused, read it again, and felt compelled to write.

To many people, it may have appeared as just another social media post. To those of us who wear the uniform and understand the sacrifices that policing demands, it was much more than that.

I saw a leader who deliberately chose to publicly recognize the dedication of his officers and men. I saw a leader who understands that behind every successful operation are human beings who spend long hours away from their families, endure difficult conditions, take personal risks, and often carry out their duties without expecting applause.

For years, our officers have stood in the scorching sun and pouring rain, worked through sleepless nights, confronted dangers, managed crises, and maintained law and order in some of the most challenging circumstances. Yet, many of these efforts pass quietly without acknowledgment. That is why the IGP’s message struck a different chord.

His words were simple, but they carried tremendous weight.

By personally appreciating officers who secured polling units, protected collation centres, managed crowds, patrolled flashpoints, and ensured a peaceful electoral process, the IGP did something profound. He reminded every police officer that their sacrifices are seen, valued, and appreciated by the highest authority in the Force.

As police officers, we know that commendation is not merely about praise; it is about belonging. It is about knowing that our efforts matter. It is about drawing strength from the realization that our leadership recognizes the sacrifices we make in service to our nation.

What particularly impressed me was that this acknowledgment came directly from the IGP himself through his personal engagement on social media. In today’s digital age, leadership visibility matters. Officers want to know that their leaders are connected to their realities. They want to know that excellence will not go unnoticed. Through this gesture, the IGP bridged the distance that sometimes exists between leadership and the rank and file.

This is the kind of leadership that inspires confidence, loyalty, commitment, and professionalism.

Indeed, while the officers deserve every commendation for their exemplary conduct during the election, the IGP equally deserves commendation for demonstrating a leadership style anchored on empathy, appreciation, and human connection.

The morale of any organization rises when its people feel seen. The spirit of service is strengthened when sacrifice is acknowledged. The bond between leadership and personnel deepens when appreciation is expressed sincerely and publicly.

As one of the beneficiaries of the institution he leads, and as an officer who understands the importance of motivation in service delivery, I found the IGP’s message refreshing, inspiring, and worthy of emulation.

Leadership is not always about grand speeches or sweeping reforms. Sometimes, leadership is found in a few sincere words spoken at the right time to the right people.

The men and women who secured the Ekiti election have been deservedly celebrated. In doing so, the Inspector-General has also reinforced an important truth: people perform best when they know their sacrifices matter.

Beyond boosting morale, the IGP’s message reinforces a culture of excellence within the Nigeria Police Force. It sends a powerful signal that hard work, professionalism, discipline, and dedication to duty are noticed and appreciated. Such leadership creates an environment where officers are inspired to give their very best, not out of fear of sanctions, but because they feel valued and respected.

Sir, this simple yet profound gesture has further endeared you to the rank and file of the Nigeria Police Force. It has strengthened our sense of belonging, renewed our commitment to service, and reinforced our confidence in your leadership.

We love you, Sir.

We appreciate your humanity, your accessibility, and your genuine concern for the welfare and morale of your personnel. Under your leadership, our loyalty remains unwavering, our commitment unshaken, and our resolve to support your vision for a more professional, people-oriented, and service-driven Nigeria Police Force stronger than ever.

May God Almighty continue to guide, strengthen, and preserve you as you lead our great institution to greater heights.
