THE Imo State police command has confirmed its operatives repelled yet another attempt in the series of attacks on its facilities by hoodlums, as an attempt to attack the command’s headquarters in Owerri, the state capital, was successfully countered on Sunday, resulting in the killing of five of the attackers.
The command also hinted that it had begun investigation into circumstances surrounding the death of a German returnee, Oguchi Unachukwu, who was murdered on May 31, in the state.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Abutu Yaro, confirmed the failed attack in a statement issued by the command’s spokesman, Bala Elkana.
Yaro said personnel of the command killed five of the hoodlums during a gun duel, while others escaped with bullet wounds.
He said: “Hoodlums attempted an attack on the police headquarters this morning (Sunday) but suffered a huge defeat.”
The police boss said the attackers, who came in a white Hummer bus, made efforts to access the police headquarters through the Works Layout but were repelled.
He said the Hummer bus was recovered with four AK-47 rifles previously stolen from the police during a recent attack on a station, just as he added that officers had been deployed to apprehend the fleeing hoodlums.
