Two police officers were killed on Thursday night, January 15, 2026, after gunmen attacked a checkpoint along Agbani Road in Enugu State.
The officers, who were attached to the Police Distress Response Squad, were said to be on routine duty when the assailants opened fire on them at close range.
The victims reportedly sustained severe gunshot wounds and were later confirmed dead at a nearby hospital.
During the attack, the gunmen also set the patrol vehicle stationed at the checkpoint ablaze before fleeing the scene.
Confirming the incident, the Enugu State Police Command said a manhunt had been launched for the perpetrators.
The command added that preliminary investigations suggested the attackers were suspected members of a proscribed group, though inquiries were still ongoing to establish their identities and motive.
The Commissioner of Police in the state condemned the attack and directed tactical and intelligence units to intensify efforts to track down those responsible. Residents were also urged to remain calm and provide useful information that could aid the investigation.
The killing of the officers has heightened concerns over security in parts of the South-East, where attacks on security personnel and facilities have persisted in recent times.
