•As NPF condemns attack on IRT operatives in Edo
The Inspector-General of Police, Dr Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the tragic incident involving personnel of the Oyo State Police Command and the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), which led to the unfortunate demise of a 14-year-old boy, Kehinde Alade.
The Inspector-General of Police, who condemned the incident, in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, assured that the officer involved in the shooting had been taken into custody while a full-scale investigation was underway.
He said that the process would be transparent, and the findings made public, to ensure justice is duly served.
The IGP also expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.
In another development, the Nigeria Police Force has strongly condemned the unprovoked attack on police operatives in the early hours of Tuesday, May 20, at Okhuimwun Community in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
Thenewbearer learnt that the operatives, who are members of the Force Intelligence Department-Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT), were in transit from Lagos through Edo State when they encountered a mob that had blocked the road immediately after the University of Benin (UNIBEN) axis.
The mob, in a display of aggression, reportedly descended on the officers, using stones, sticks and other dangerous objects to inflict serious injuries on two police personnel.
The FPRO said it was noteworthy that despite the provocation and threat to life, the officers exercised restraint by not resorting to the use of force.
He disclosed that the injured officers were receiving medical attention, and were in a stable condition.
ACP Adejobi gave NPF’s warning against acts of lawlessness and unprovoked aggression against its personnel who are committed to maintaining law and order.
He assured the public that investigations had commenced, while appropriate legal actions would be taken against those found culpable.
He also reiterated the Force commitment to protection of lives and property, urging citizens to remain law-abiding and channel grievances through lawful and peaceful means.
