IBADAN — The pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending several weeks in captivity.
The victims were kidnapped in May when armed men attacked schools in the Yawota and Esiele communities, sparking widespread concern among parents, residents, and government officials.
The incident drew national attention and prompted calls for intensified security measures across schools in the state.
Authorities had mounted sustained efforts to secure the release of the victims, with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde repeatedly appealing for collaboration among security agencies to ensure their safe return.
Security operatives also maintained that efforts were ongoing to rescue the abductees and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The release of the pupils and teachers has brought relief to their families and communities, who had endured weeks of uncertainty over their fate.
The abduction had disrupted academic activities and heightened fears over the safety of students and teachers in rural parts of the state.
As of the time of filing this report, details surrounding the circumstances of their release had not been fully disclosed.
However, the development marks a significant breakthrough in efforts to end one of the most high-profile school kidnapping cases recorded in the South-West in recent times.
The Oyo State Government and security agencies are expected to provide further information on the victims’ condition and the next steps in ongoing investigations.
