•Recover 43 vehicles
A 21-year-old driver, Olumide Olusola, has been arrested by operatives in Lagos State Police Command, for allegedly killing a police sergeant, Johnson Okediji, after speeding off during a stop-and-search operation and dragging the officer underneath his vehicle for several metres.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, disclosed this on Monday, September 28, during a press briefing on the operational achievements of the command for September.
The incident, according to CP Tijani, occurred on Saturday, September 26, 2026, along Olugbede Street, Egbeda,
The police boss said that police officers on stop-and-search duty had signalled the driver in a Lexus ES 350, with registration number FKJ 223 KX, asking him to stop.
He said that the driver initially did, but suddenly sped off as Sergeant Okediji approached the driver’s side, knocking the officer down and dragging him underneath the vehicle despite repeated attempts by police officers and passers-by to make him stop.
Thenewsbearer learnt that the driver was eventually chased and arrested.
The Commissioner said the officer sustained multiple fractures and serious head injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital before being referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
He said the remains had been deposited at the Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the vehicle had been recovered to the police station.
Also, in one of the major armed robbery cases which was captured in CCTV and circulated on the social media, police arrested 29-year-old Ezekiel Sunday Obi following an investigation into the robbery of a man at Ghost and Spirit Lounge, Ekoro Road, Abule Egba.
The Commissioner said the incident occurred on September 26 when armed men, reportedly carrying an AK-47 rifle and travelling in a grey Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV, allegedly robbed the victim of his gold wrist chain and rings.
Obi was arrested around 1am on September 27 at the Toll Gate on the Lagos-Ogun boundary, while efforts were ongoing to arrest other members of the gang and recover the remaining exhibits.
Enumerating the achievements of the Command, the Commissioner of Police disclosed that the command arrested 32 suspects during the month in connection with armed robbery, cultism, unlawful possession of firearms, stealing and other violent crimes.
Among the exhibits recovered were 43 vehicles and two vehicle keys, five pump-action guns, five locally-made pistols, 20 live ammunition and cartridges, 15 expended ammunition, two cutlasses, suspected criminal charms, a television set, a radiator, a car jack, an engine block, as well as vehicle spare parts and tools.
Tijani said the command also recovered N2.5 million cash and vandalised electrical wires during its operations.
In an operation, police arrested three suspected robbers — Lekan Jimoh, 32; Oyepeju Olanrewaju, 33; and Olurebi Suleiman, 30 — in Idi-Oro, Mushin.
Tijani said intelligence obtained during interrogation led operatives to Igbogbo, Ikorodu, where they recovered a black pump-action gun and 11 live cartridges from 47-year-old Banjo Taiwo.
Further investigation reportedly led to the arrest of 26-year-old Ebuka Benedict at Olorunsogo, Mushin, where one locally-made Beretta pistol and four live 9mm ammunition were recovered from his room.
The suspect also reportedly confessed to membership of the Eiye confraternity.
The command, according to the Commissioner, also arrested 12 suspected members of the Eiye Confraternity in the Imeke area of Badagry following intelligence-led operations.
The suspects, aged between 23 and 49 years, allegedly admitted membership of the group and were reportedly holding various positions within the organisation.
Recovered from them were a Mercedes-Benz vehicle, two car keys, one locally made cut-to-size gun and several suspected criminal charms.
CP Tijani said seven of the suspects had been charged to court, while investigation continued to recover additional firearms and arrest other members of the group.
He added that two other suspected cultists, Femi Ishola, 35, and Daniel Luke, 27, were arrested at Ganyigbo Beach Yard after being placed on the command’s watchlist following previous arrests of suspected members of their group.
Both suspects reportedly made confessional statements admitting membership of the Eiye confraternity.
In another major development, the Commissioner said police arrested a 15-year-old suspected arms courier, Taiye Majekodunmi, at Cappa, Oshodi, while allegedly transporting concealed firearms and ammunition inside a loaf of bread.
According to him, the teenager was allegedly conveying the weapons for delivery to a receiver on the instruction of one Samuel.
Recovered from him were one locally made fabricated Beretta pistol, four rounds of unexpended 9mm ammunition and one locally-made single-barrel cut-to-size gun.
Further investigation allegedly led to the recovery of another cut-to-size gun and 11 unexpended cartridges linked to the suspect.
In another operation on September 28, police arrested 32-year-old Ojo Azeez during a patrol along Oko Oba Road.
Fatai said some hoodlums took to their heels on sighting the police, but Azeez was arrested after a hot chase.
A search allegedly led to the recovery of one locally-made cut-to-size pistol, a radiator, car jack, engine block and a bag containing different vehicle spare parts and tools.
The Commissioner said investigation was ongoing to establish the source of the recovered items and the suspect’s involvement in other criminal activities.
The command also arrested Ogunbayo Abdulwahib following information that a group of boys had allegedly travelled from Idi-Oro, Mushin, to the Chevron area of Lekki-Ajah, where they reportedly entered residential apartments and dispossessed occupants of valuables.
According to the Commissioner of Police, Abdulwahib was arrested in Idi-Oro and subsequently led operatives to Muritical Hotel and Suites, Anu Oluwapo Street, where N2.5 million and three mobile phones were recovered from a room he had reportedly lodged with other gang members.
The other suspects allegedly fled before the arrival of the police, while efforts to arrest them continue.
Similarly, 53-year-old Sijuade Alade was arrested in Ojo following credible intelligence, with one locally made pistol recovered from him.
Tijani said that investigation was ongoing to determine how he obtained the firearm and his possible connection to criminal activities.
In Epe, police arrested 27-year-old Joshua Benard following a distress call from the Agric area. He was allegedly found in possession of building electrical wires suspected to have been stolen.
Six suspected hoodlums were also arrested following a distress call over alleged breaking, looting and destruction of property along the Ejigbo-Idimu Road.
They were identified as Ayomide Odusanya, 18; Michael Olushi, 18; Victor Denis, 20; Favour Obaji, 18; and Jamiu Isah, 16. Two cutlasses and a stolen television set were reportedly recovered.
In Badagry, police arrested 26-year-old carpenter, Kole Josu, over alleged unlawful possession of a firearm and public disturbance.
Tijani said the suspect was allegedly using the firearm to terrorise residents, adding that two victims had so far come forward to make statements while the suspect had also made useful statements.
The Commissioner further disclosed that the command had commenced another enforcement operation against vehicles with covered number plates and unregistered vehicles, during which more than 41 vehicles were impounded.
He said further checks and enforcement actions were ongoing.
Tijani assured residents that the command would continue to protect police personnel lawfully carrying out their duties while holding accountable any officer whose conduct falls below the standards expected of a police officer.
He commended officers and operatives for the breakthroughs and appreciated members of the public for their cooperation and timely provision of credible information.
“Security is a shared responsibility,” the Commissioner said.
