The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), has rescued four nursing mothers and their babies from an illegal dumpsite in the Agboju area along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
‎
‎The rescue operation was carried out during an ongoing inter-agency cleanup exercise aimed at removing illegal dumpsites, shanties and other environmental infractions along the corridor, authorities said.
‎
‎LAGESC Corps Marshal, Major Olaniyi Cole (retd.), said operatives were shocked to discover young mothers living with their infants in what he described as inhumane conditions. He noted that one of the babies rescued was only nine days old and had been living in an environment marked by filth, poor air quality and limited access to basic necessities.
‎
‎The rescued women were identified as Fareedat Muyideen, 23, from Kwara State, with her two-year-old child; Ayomide Ayomoke, 25, from Ondo State, with her 10-month-old baby; Amanda Oziema Abalihi, 20, from Anambra State, with her nine-day-old baby; and Chisom Ugo, 24, from Imo State, with her 11-month-old child.
‎
‎Cole said the women and their children were rescued over concerns for their health and safety and are currently receiving medical attention.
‎
‎He added that the state government would work towards reuniting them with their families or referring them to appropriate welfare authorities for rehabilitation and reintegration.
‎
‎The Corps Marshal urged parents and guardians to pay closer attention to the welfare of their children, warning that neglect and abuse often push young people onto the streets.
‎
‎He reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable children and cautioned that those found culpable of child neglect or abuse could face prosecution.
