Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Wednesday, August 5, called for closer collaboration between government and faith-based institutions to build a more peaceful, just and prosperous Nigeria, while formally reaffirming his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election and seeking the support and prayers of the Methodist Church Nigeria.

Speaking at the opening of the 50th/15th Biennial Conference of the Methodist Church Nigeria held at the Bashmor Event Centre in Ibadan, Makinde said governments alone could not build enduring nations without the active role of institutions that shape values, strengthen families and promote hope.

The governor praised the Methodist Church for its longstanding contributions to education, healthcare, community development and moral upbringing, describing such institutions as indispensable partners in national development.

Drawing from the conference theme, “I Will Fight for You” (Exodus 14:14), Makinde said while the scripture encourages believers to trust in God, it also places a responsibility on leaders to uphold justice, fairness, peace and equal opportunities for all citizens.

According to him, his administration’s development agenda in Oyo State has focused on improving the lives of ordinary people, insisting that Nigeria’s challenge is not a shortage of talent or natural resources but the need for selfless and unifying leadership.

“It is no secret that I am running to be the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and this is the type of leadership I will offer if given the opportunity to serve,” the governor said.

He appealed to the church for its prayers and support, expressing confidence that Nigeria’s future could be transformed through faith, unity and collective commitment.

Makinde also recalled that he had prayed at the same venue in 2018 before contesting the Oyo governorship election, saying the Methodist conference offered him another opportunity to seek divine guidance over his presidential ambition.

Earlier, the Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence Dr. Oliver Ali Aba (JP), urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity, inflation, banditry and kidnapping across the country.

He commended the Federal Government, the Oyo State Government and security agencies for the successful rescue of abducted schoolchildren and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area, while urging governments at all levels to strengthen security and avoid paying ransom to kidnappers.

The prelate also called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in prayer, seeking God’s mercy, justice and prosperity for the nation.
