A suspect, Umar Shuaibu, who was seen in a viral video physically abusing his niece at Angwan Tana area of Jimeta, Yola, has been apprehended by Adamawa State Police Command’s officers.
The arrest followed the circulation of a disturbing video showing the abuse.
The Command’s spokesman, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, while giving a brief on the case, said that on March 13, the niece, identified as Salamatu Yakubu and aged 22, was severely beaten by her uncle Shaibu.
He stated that during the assault, someone recorded the incident and shared the video on social media, which generated reactions from concerned citizens, good Samaritans, Non Governmental Organisations and civil society organisations, with several calls made to the police.
SP Nguroje said that a timely response from the police led to the arrest of the suspect, with the assistance of concerned citizens through community policing strategies.
He disclosed that the victim had been taken to the hospital for medical attention and is responding to treatment, while suspect is undergoing interrogation at the Gender Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), to be followed by diligent prosecution.
“The Command assures the public that the case will be thoroughly investigated and the suspect will be prosecuted under the relevant sections of the law,” the PPRO said.
