A 46-year-old man, Sobola Olatunji, has been arrested by Homicide detectives from Ogun State Police Command, for allegedly stabbing his wife, a mother of three, fatally over suspected infidelity.
The suspect, who is a staff of Remo North Local Government Area of the state, was picked by the detectives on Saturday, February 13, 2021.
Police image-maker in the state, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the story in a statement on Monday, February 15.
Oyeyemi disclosed that Olatunji was arrested after the father of the deceased, one Alhaji Ambali Yinusa, reported at Owode-Egba divisional headquarters that his son-in-law had a misunderstanding with his wife, Momudat Sobola, which led to a physical fight between them.
Alhaji Yinusa further explained that Olatunji took a knife and stabbed his wife on the back as the fight raged between them.
The PPRO said that the reported incident made the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Matthew Ediae, to send detectives to the scene, leading to the arrest of the suspect.
Thenewsbearer gathered that Olatunji’s wife was rushed to a hospital for treatment, but gave up the ghost while she was being attended to by doctors who tried to save her life.
Explaining what led to the fight during interrogation, the suspect, who said he had been married to his wife for 20 years, claimed that he became suspicious of his wife was having extra-marital when he saw some text messages on her phone.
Olatunji further explained to the police detectives that a fight broke out between him and his wife when he challenged her about his suspicion, with him eventually stabbing her to death.
The PPRO added that the corpse of the deceased had been deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Reacting on the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Edward A. Ajogun ordered the immediate transfer of the case to Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, for further investigation and subsequent prosecution of the murder suspect.
