The Kwara State Police Command has debunked reports circulating on social media that a motorcyclist was shot by police officers at Oyun Bridge, Ilorin.
The Command, in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 23, by its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said no person was shot during the incident.
According to the statement, the incident occurred while police personnel were conducting routine patrol and stop-and-search duties around Oyun Bridge.
The Command said a 23-year-old motorcyclist, identified as Abdurasaq Lukman, allegedly riding at top speed, knocked down Corporal Saka Azeez, one of the officers on duty.
It said the impact left the police officer with serious head injuries and a fracture, while Lukman sustained minor injuries.
“Other officers at the scene immediately responded and conveyed both the injured officer and the motorcyclist to a medical facility for treatment,” the statement said.
The Command added that Lukman was treated and discharged but is currently in police custody to assist with investigations.
Corporal Azeez, however, remains under medical care and requires further medical examination and scans to determine the full extent of his head injury.
The Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, CP Ojo AdeKimi, urged members of the public to exercise caution when sharing unverified information.
The Command acknowledged public concerns over police activities, stressing that verifying information before circulating it was important to prevent unnecessary anxiety and misunderstanding.
