Hundreds of motorists and commuters were left stranded for more than 14 hours on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway following a massive traffic gridlock that stretched across several sections of the busy highway.
The congestion, which reportedly began after an accident involving a tanker and other vehicles, left travellers trapped overnight, with many unable to reach their destinations until the following day.
The gridlock affected both private and commercial vehicles, forcing some commuters to spend hours on the road without access to food, water or basic amenities.
Several motorists described the experience as exhausting and frustrating, noting that traffic movement was extremely slow as emergency responders worked to clear the obstruction and restore normal flow on the expressway.
Passengers travelling between Lagos and Ibadan lamented the long delay, saying the situation disrupted business activities and personal engagements.
Some travellers reportedly abandoned commercial vehicles and trekked portions of the route in search of alternative means of transportation.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, serves as a major link between Lagos and other parts of the country and is frequently affected by accidents, vehicle breakdowns and heavy traffic.
Emergency and traffic management officials were said to have been deployed to the affected areas to ease the congestion and remove damaged vehicles from the roadway.
Motorists were advised to exercise patience and consider alternative routes whenever possible.
Many road users called on the relevant authorities to improve traffic management and emergency response mechanisms along the expressway to prevent a recurrence of such prolonged gridlock.
