Nigeria and Angola have taken a significant step to strengthen diplomatic relations by signing a visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic and official/service passports.
The landmark deal was formalised on the sidelines of the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Heads of State and Government Summit held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Sunday, February 15, 2026.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Ambassador Téte António, Angola’s Minister of External Relations. The agreement waives visa requirements for diplomatic and official passport holders from both countries, allowing them to travel between Nigeria and Angola without visa restrictions.
In his remarks at the signing ceremony, Minister Tuggar described the agreement as a long-awaited and timely milestone that will strengthen bilateral engagement, deepen cooperation and ease official travel.
He highlighted that the arrangement would support smoother governmental exchanges, foster institutional collaboration and create broader opportunities for joint initiatives.
Tuggar also reflected on the historic ties between Nigeria and Angola, particularly Nigeria’s support during Angola’s struggle for independence, a legacy he said provides a firm foundation for ongoing partnership.
For his part, Ambassador António welcomed the agreement, describing it as forward-looking and integral to consolidating diplomatic ties while opening avenues for expanded cooperation in the future.
Officials from both countries indicated that this agreement could pave the way for broader visa liberalisation and further measures to enhance mobility and cooperation, though no specific timeline has been announced.
