The Ogun State Police Command has announced plans to arrest and prosecute a social media user after she allegedly admitted that her viral claim of being raped was untrue.
A police source told newsmen that the woman — known online as Mirabel and followed widely on TikTok — acknowledged in a recorded phone call with social media personality VeryDarkMan that parts of her earlier allegation were fabricated. In the audio, she reportedly apologised, saying she was “very sorry” and attributed her actions to drug use and not thinking clearly when she posted the videos.
The alleged admission came after the content creator first claimed a stranger had forced entry into her residence in the Ogijo area of Ogun State and assaulted her. That post sparked widespread outrage and discussions about sexual violence on social media.
A police insider said officers were at the hospital where Mirabel was receiving treatment and that she would be taken into custody once discharged, with charges prepared for court. The move, the source said, is intended to serve as a deterrent to others.
Earlier official accounts from the police indicated Mirabel had voluntarily reported the incident at the Ibafo Police Station and was referred for medical care due to her fragile condition. Updates from various media outlets noted that she was not in custody at that stage, and the investigation was ongoing.
In a separate statement, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency highlighted the importance of thorough fact-finding in such cases, warning against misinformation while underscoring that legitimate survivors should not be silenced.
Police say final updates on the matter will be released in due course as investigations continue.
