‎The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Oyo State has suspended the indefinite strike action embarked upon by public primary and secondary school teachers following the abduction of teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
‎
‎The suspension was announced on Wednesday after renewed engagements between the union and the Oyo State Government over efforts to rescue the kidnapped victims and strengthen security around schools.
‎
‎In a statement jointly signed by the Oyo State NUT Chairman, Hassan Ajibola Fatai, and Secretary, Olukayode Salami, the union directed teachers across the state to resume duties on Thursday, July 2.
‎
‎The union said the decision followed assurances from the state government that concrete measures were being implemented to secure the release of the abducted teachers and learners and prevent future attacks on schools.
‎
‎According to the statement, government commitments include intensified rescue operations, the deployment of a Joint Security Task Force to vulnerable communities, improved school security infrastructure, enhanced intelligence gathering, and support for affected families.
‎
‎The union noted that the suspension was made in the interest of teachers, students, and the general public while efforts continue to ensure the safe return of those still in captivity.
‎
‎It also urged teachers to remain vigilant and promptly report any security threats within their schools and communities.
‎
‎The strike was declared after gunmen abducted dozens of pupils and teachers during coordinated attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15.
‎
‎ The incident sparked widespread concern and prompted the NUT to withdraw services indefinitely in protest of the deteriorating security situation.
‎While commending members for their solidarity and compliance during the industrial action, the union reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare and security of teachers across the state.
‎
‎The Oyo State Government had repeatedly appealed to the union to call off the strike, assuring stakeholders that security agencies were intensifying efforts to rescue the abducted victims and restore confidence in the safety of schools.
‎
‎The suspension of the strike is expected to pave the way for the reopening of public schools across Oyo State as academic activities resume after weeks of disruption.
