The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Onoja Samuel, for allegedly firing gunshots during a confrontation with traders at a market in Kubwa, Abuja.
Samuel, a Deputy Superintendent of Corps, was reportedly at the market with a pistol following allegations that some traders had assaulted his wife.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, saying the suspect was arrested after police operatives responded to a distress call.
Adeh said the Kubwa Police Division received the report at about 1:50 p.m. on October 25, 2026, indicating that an armed man was firing sporadically into the air at the market.
She said the operatives swiftly moved to the scene, where they disarmed and arrested the suspect.
“Preliminary investigations identified the suspect as one Onoja Samuel, a Deputy Superintendent of Corps with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps,” the police spokesperson said.
According to her, preliminary findings showed that the officer had gone to the market armed with a pistol following reports that some traders had assaulted his wife.
“During an ensuing argument with the traders, he fired several shots into the air,” Adeh added.
The police recovered a CZ pistol and 17 rounds of live 9mm ammunition from the suspect during the arrest.
Adeh said the officer remained in police custody and would be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.
Meanwhile, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, urged personnel of other security agencies to exercise restraint and ensure proper coordination with the police when carrying out authorised operations within the territory.
Sanusi advised operatives of sister agencies to notify the police divisions responsible for the areas where they intend to conduct operations to promote effective coordination and prevent avoidable clashes.
The police command reiterated the importance of cooperation among security agencies in maintaining law and order across the FCT.
