Detectives in Ogun State Police Command on Friday, April 28, 2023 apprehended a member of a ritual killing syndicate, Ifasoji Ayangbesan, who had been wanted after the murder and dismemberment of the body of a victim, Oyindamola Adeyemi, in Ijebu Ode on January 28.
The 35-year old suspect, whose other gang members were arrested after the incident, was eventually nabbed following painstaking intelligence-based investigation.
According to the command’s spokesman, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, who made the arrest known on Sunday, April 30, the investigation was embarked upon by detectives from Obalende divisional headquarters, which led them to the suspect’s hideout at Ijade Iloti area of Ijebu Ode.
The PPRO said that the suspect who was indicted by his syndicate members earlier arrested as the person who bought the two legs of the victim, took to flight immediately he got to know that his involvement had been disclosed.
“Since then, the Divisional Police Officer, Obalende Division, SP Murphy Salami, detailed his detectives to be on his (Ayangbesan) trail, with a view to arresting him, possibly recovering the deceased’s two legs from him and prosecuting him with his colleagues in crime.
“Luck ran against him when he was apprehended at his Ijade Iloti hideout on the 28th of April 2023. Immediately he was arrested, the suspect made an offer of one million naira bribe to the policemen, which was rejected.
“On interrogation, he confessed to being part of the syndicate that killed Oyindamola Adeyemi, and that he was the person who severed the two legs of the deceased which he claimed he used for ritual purpose,” Oyeyemi explained in the statement.
He said that the state Commissioner of Police, Olanrewaju Yomi Oladimeji, who commended his men for their uprightness, had directed that the suspect be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department.
