The Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed three senior police officers and demoted 16 others over various cases of misconduct, including conduct unbecoming of officers of the law.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Head of Protocol and Public Relations of the Commission, Torty Njoku Kalu, on November 4.
The Commission also approved severe reprimands for 21 officers and ordinary reprimands for two others, bringing the total number of officers sanctioned to 42. Three officers were, however, exonerated, while some previously suspended officers were reinstated into the Nigeria Police Force.
Thenewsbearer gathered that the decisions were reached at the Commission’s plenary meeting presided over by its Chairman, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (retd.), at the Solomon Arase Conference Hall, the Commission’s corporate headquarters in Abuja.
The PSC reaffirmed its zero tolerance for corruption, human rights abuses, interference in land disputes and civil matters, as well as other forms of misconduct within the Police Force.
Speaking after the meeting, Argungu assured Nigerians that the Commission would sustain the speedy handling of disciplinary cases to promote professionalism and accountability in the Force.
He commended the Chairman of the PSC Standing Committee on Discipline and Legal Matters, Hon. Justice Paul Adamu Galumje (retd.), and other board members for their commitment to the consideration of disciplinary cases and appeals.
Those commended included DIG (Dr) Taiwo Lakanu (retd.), Hon. Justice Christine Dabup (retd.), Alhaji Abdulfatah Mohammed, the Secretary to the Commission, Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, and the Director of the Police Discipline Department, Mr Ferdinand U. Ekpe.
