The University of Ibadan has expressed deep sorrow over the death of renowned African linguist and Foundation President of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL), Emeritus Professor Ayo Bamgbose, who died at the age of 94.
In a statement, the university described Professor Bamgbose as one of Africa’s foremost scholars whose contributions to linguistics, education and intellectual development left an enduring legacy across Nigeria and beyond.
Professor Bamgbose served the University of Ibadan with distinction, rising to become Dean of the Faculty of Arts between 1971 and 1973. Throughout his academic career, he earned widespread recognition for his pioneering work in African languages and linguistics, as well as his commitment to advancing scholarship on the continent.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, on behalf of the university community, extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late scholar, his friends, colleagues and members of the intellectual community.
Prof. Adebowale noted that Professor Bamgbose’s outstanding contributions to academia and his unwavering dedication to the promotion of African languages would continue to inspire generations of scholars.
The university prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and for strength and comfort for his family and all those mourning his passing.
