‎Soldier, police officer killed as troops rescue nine Zamfara kidnap victims

A Nigerian Army officer and a police officer were killed during a fierce gun battle with terrorists in Zamfara State as troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA successfully rescued nine abducted civilians.

‎The military said the incident occurred when terrorists attempted to infiltrate a Forward Operating Base located at Kasuwan Daji in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area in the early hours of Saturday.

‎In a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for 8 Division and Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, the troops repelled the attack, inflicting heavy casualties on the assailants and forcing them to retreat.

‎According to the statement, reinforcements were subsequently deployed, prompting troops to launch a pursuit operation against the fleeing terrorists, who had abducted several residents from the surrounding community during the attack.

‎“The relentless pursuit by the troops led to the rescue of nine abducted locals, who were safely recovered,” the Army said.
‎
‎Despite the successful operation, the military confirmed that one Army officer and one police officer lost their lives in the exchange of fire, while two soldiers sustained gunshot wounds.
‎
‎The injured personnel were airlifted to a medical facility for advanced treatment and are reported to be in stable condition, according to the statement.
‎
‎The Army commended the bravery and professionalism of the troops involved in the operation, describing their actions as a demonstration of the military’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the North-West region.
‎Operation FANSAN YAMMA has continued to intensify counter-terrorism and anti-banditry operations across Zamfara and other states in the North-West as security forces seek to curb persistent attacks by armed groups in the region.
