President Bola Tinubu has assured the United States and European partners that Nigeria will move towards state policing while fully implementing local government autonomy as part of broader governance reforms.
The President disclosed this on Thursday at the 14th National Caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, where he stressed that the creation of state police “must happen” to strengthen internal security and subnational governance.
Tinubu also urged governors to stop withholding funds meant for local government chairpersons, insisting that autonomy would be meaningless without direct access to statutory allocations.
According to him, discussions with foreign partners focused on Nigeria’s security architecture and governance structure, during which he expressed confidence that the APC would provide the necessary backing to pass a state police bill.
He further charged party leaders to promote reconciliation, flexibility and tolerance at the grassroots, saying political stability depended on leaders taking responsibility for developments within their states and local governments.
The President also called for full compliance with the recent Supreme Court judgment on local government autonomy, noting that effective grassroots governance was critical to national stability.
