Abuja, Nigeria — February 24, 2026 —
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly removed Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun from office and named Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Olatunji Tunji Disu as his successor, sources in the presidency and police circles confirmed on Tuesday.
Egbetokun, who has been serving as Nigeria’s police chief since June 19, 2023, was asked to resign during a meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja earlier today, according to a presidency source. Plans for a formal handover ceremony are reportedly underway.
AIG Disu, a senior officer with extensive command experience — including leadership roles in Lagos, Rivers and at the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID) in Lagos — is expected to assume the top position in the Nigeria Police Force.
At the time of reporting, neither the Federal Government nor the Nigeria Police Force had issued an official statement confirming the changes.
The Force Public Relations Officer did not respond to requests for comment.
The development marks a significant leadership shift in Nigeria’s security architecture amid ongoing debates over policing reforms and the future direction of the Nigeria Police Force.
