Three of the unknown gunmen who attacked a police checkpoint on Okija-Onitsha highway on Thursday, October 7, 2021, have been neutralised by troops of Sector 5, Exercise Golden Dawn, that were deployed in Anambra State.
Briefing newsmen in a statement issued on Saturday, October 9, the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, stated that the gallant troops engaged and overwhelmed the gunmen with superior firepower, forcing them to flee the scene.
However, the troops gave the gunmen a hot pursuit, resulting in a gun duel.
Onyema said that three of the gunmen, who drove in a Toyota Hilux SUV and Toyota Hiace (Hummer) bus), fell to the troops’ firepower, while others fled with gunshot injuries.
Recovered were a vehicle and two motorcycles during the combing of the surrounding areas for the fleeing terrorists.
The Army Public Relations Director described as unfortunate the death of a policeman, as he paid the supreme price while in line of duty for the nation.
Speaking further, he said: “The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Farouk Yahaya, commends the troops for the feat and urges them to sustain the momentum against all criminal elements operating in the region.
“The COAS also sympathises with the family of the fallen hero and prays for the repose of his soul.”
