US President, Donald Trump, welcomed Russian president, Vladimir Putin, to Alaska on Friday to discuss how to end the war in Ukraine.
Unlike how Ukraine president, Volodymyr Zelensky was treated in the White House when he visited in January, Putin was treated with respect and even had Trump wait for him at the foot of his plane.
However, at the end of a three-hour meeting, President Trump said no deal was reached, but progress made, while Putin said he is “sincerely interested” in ending the war, without giving details. Neither took questions from the media at the end of the summit
Trump promised that a new summit would be held soon, possibly in Moscow.
On the flight back to Washington, Trump called Ukraine president to brief him about the discussion between himself and Putin.
He had earlier said a second meeting would have Zelensky in attendance.
Major European powers are yet to comment on the meeting, but many would be shocked to see the kind on treatment given to Putin, an international pariah.
