A United Kingdom court has remanded a 32-year-old man, Maxwell Oguanaya, in custody over the alleged murder of a 41-year-old Nigerian, Taiwo Ekerin, following a violent altercation in Lewisham, London.
According to a statement released by the Metropolitan Police, officers responded to reports of an altercation on Lewisham High Street at about 4:40 a.m. on May 24.
Upon arrival, they discovered Ekerin suffering from a serious head injury. He received emergency treatment at the scene before being taken to hospital.
Despite medical efforts, Ekerin succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on May 30.
Police said his family has been informed, and specialist officers are providing support to his next of kin.
Investigators arrested Oguanaya, of Eastfield Road, Enfield, on June 4 on suspicion of murder.
He was subsequently charged and appeared before Ealing Magistrates’ Court on June 5, where he was remanded in custody pending further proceedings. He is scheduled to appear in court again on June 9.
The Metropolitan Police also confirmed that a second man, aged 34, was arrested on suspicion of murder on June 5 and remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the circumstances surrounding the altercation that led to Ekerin’s death.
Meanwhile, Ekerin’s twin brother, Kehinde, described the incident as an unprovoked attack during a night out.
In a fundraising appeal, the family said they were seeking public support to cover funeral expenses and assist Ekerin’s loved ones during the difficult period.
