‎Why Egbetokun resigned as IGP — Presidency

‎Wednesday, February 25, 2025. Abuja: The Presidency has confirmed that Kayode Egbetokun stepped down as the Inspector-General of Police in a letter he submitted on Tuesday, saying he needed to focus on pressing family matters that require his full attention.

‎However, sources within the Presidency told reporters that President Bola Tinubu asked him to resign during a private meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday evening.

‎One senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that it was at that meeting that Egbetokun was told to go.
‎
‎The IGP’s visit to the Villa was not part of a scheduled event; he arrived around the time governors were attending an interfaith iftar with the president, which initially raised questions about his purpose there.
‎
‎Egbetokun was appointed IGP on June 19, 2023, after serving as Deputy Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department. His leadership faced growing criticism over the country’s worsening security situation, including high-profile kidnappings, bandit attacks, and other violent crimes.

‎The Presidency has not given further details beyond the family-related reason, but multiple reports indicate his resignation was linked to pressure from the administration.
