Super Falcons and Al-Ittihad Ladies defender, Ashleigh Plumptre, has committed her future to the Saudi Arabian club, signing a two-year contract extension, the club announced on Monday.

The 26-year-old joined Al-Ittihad in the summer of 2023 after her contract with Leicester City Women expired. Since then, she has been a standout performer in the Saudi Women’s Premier League, quickly rising to become team captain.

Her impact was immediate, highlighted by a debut hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Eastern Flame. This season, Plumptre has made 10 appearances, starting eight, and has contributed two goals, an assist, and five clean sheets.

Her performances since recovering from injury have been crucial for Al-Ittihad, with her defensive solidity and leadership qualities earning praise from the club’s management.

Ashleigh Plumptre’s time in Saudi Arabia hasn’t been without challenges. After playing a key role in helping Nigeria qualify for the Olympics for the first time in 16 years, she was sidelined due to surgery, missing the 2024 Games in France.

However, the defender made a strong comeback in October 2024, returning to full fitness and continuing to lead Al-Ittihad on the pitch.

Despite her return to fitness, Plumptre has yet to fully reclaim her spot in the Super Falcons lineup. She was called up for an international friendly against France, which Nigeria lost 1-2, marking her first appearance since her injury.

While timings didn’t align for her to participate in the Olympic squad, Plumptre could be a vital addition for coach Justin Madugu’s side at the 2025 WAFCON, potentially marking her second appearance at the continental tournament after the 2022 edition.
